Grace Harbin Wever, born in
Philadelphia, is a self-taught fiber artist whose studio and
home today are near Westcliffe, Colorado. The mountain, desert
and seascapes visited in her award-winning fabric collages
reflect her love of travel. Spiritual themes are also depicted
in her work. “On Wings of the Wind,” is a 13-part body of work
illustrating poetry from David’s “Song of Deliverance” from
Second Samuel. Wever’s collages incorporate layers of
brilliantly colored silk, hand-dyed cotton, metallic, and
synthetic fabrics. Iridescence and transparency bring
additional light and airiness to her artwork. In many of her
works, stitching embellishes the design, and adds
three-dimensionality.
Galleries representing Grace’s
work include the Trembling Aspen Gallery in Buena Vista, the
Paint Horse Gallery in Breckenridge, and the Third Street
Gallery, Westcliffe, CO. She is a Board member, past president
and was interim Gallery Director of the Arkansas Valley Art
Center at Colorado Mountain College. Her work is found in
collections throughout the U.S., and she has received
commissions from Exempla Medical Center (Lafayette, CO), as well
as private collectors.
Prior to retirement to the art
world, Wever worked in science, business, and public policy.
She earned a B.A. and Ph.D. from Temple University, and was a
research fellow at Baylor Medical Center and the University of
Rochester Medical Center in the fields of cell and molecular
biology, virology, electron microscopy and image processing.
She was a research faculty member at the University of
Rochester’s Institute of Optics, a manager and lab director at
Kodak, and a senior manager/consultant with KPMG Peat Marwick in
Philadelphia and Denver. Wever chaired the Department of
Commerce’s National Sea Grant Panel, which advises NOAA on
coastal and marine research. She was founder, first president
and CEO of the Council of Great Lakes Industries, a binational
public policy body. Her book on “Strategic Environmental
Management” published by John Wiley & Sons has received
international recognition. Wever, along with one of her sons,
earned a black belt in Tae KwonDo. She is married to Albrecht
Wever, a physicist, engineer, and innovator.
